Day 1

The 14-day EMT Boot Camp is a two-week program that includes hands-on exercises, active learning, and clinical simulations that will prepare you for a successful career as an EMT. Taught by seasoned EMS professionals, the EMT program includes approximately 12 hours of EMS instruction per day for 14 consecutive days. The primary resource for the EMT Boot Camp is the textbook: Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Digital Advantage Package, Twelfth Edition. First published in 1971 by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), this textbook laid the foundation of EMS training. Today, the Eleventh Edition is transforming how EMS education is delivered throughout the world and helps develop world-class EMS professionals around the globe. EMT Textbook Chapter 1—EMS Systems: Summary

Chapter one focuses on the emergency medical services (EMS) system including the history of EMS, the roles and responsibilities of EMS personnel, the attributes an EMT is expected to possess, and EMT licensure criteria. You will learn the importance of patient safety, data collection, and evidence-based decision-making.

You will also explore the purpose of the EMS continuous quality improvement (CQI) process, the EMS role in disease and injury prevention and public education, and the impact of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) on patient privacy. This chapter will give you a broad understanding of the EMS system and all its working parts that will be essential to your success as an EMT.

EMT Textbook Chapter 2—Workforce Safety and Wellness: Summary

Chapter two covers workforce safety and wellness within the emergency medical services (EMS) system and the prevention of disease transmission. You will gain a broad understanding of standard safety precautions and decontamination processes. This chapter will teach you the importance of decontaminating everything from your ambulance to your EMT equipment after treating a patient.

Chapter two further addresses the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and its many uses. Injury prevention is also covered, including work-related injuries, disease transmission, and general wellness principles. Of course, not all injuries are physical. EMTs have to manage a great deal of stress. For this reason, this chapter touches on the management of stress and some of the coping mechanisms you can use when dealing with death and dying.

EMT Textbook Chapter 3—Medical, Legal, and Ethical Issues: Summary

Chapter three discusses the medical, legal, and ethical issues involved with the EMS profession. You will learn about consent—including expressed, implied, and involuntary consent—and how it impacts your decision-making as an EMT. You will also learn about EMS protocols for using forcible restraint, the importance of do-not-resuscitate (DNR) orders, and what to do if a patient refuses treatment or transport.

This chapter will also cover the physical, presumptive, and definitive signs of death. You will learn the signs of death, how to manage organ donors, and the importance of medical identification devices in treating EMS patients. This chapter provides a basic understanding of the laws, as well as ethical and moral considerations, that apply to the EMT.

EMT Textbook Chapter 5—Medical Terminology

Chapter five focuses on the important medical terms used in communications with emergency medical services (EMS) and other medical professionals. This includes an in-depth study of relevant root words, abbreviations, acronyms, symbols, prefixes, and suffixes.

After completing this coursework, you will be proficient in all relevant medical terms used in written and verbal communication with EMS colleagues and other healthcare professionals. You will understand the purpose of medical terminology, identify its components, and define an unknown medical term based on an understanding of its components. You will also be familiar with the error-prone medical abbreviations and acronyms. Common direction, movement, and position terms are also covered in this chapter.

Day 1

With the successful completion of Day 1, you will have a broad understanding of the EMS systems, workforce safety and wellness, medical, legal, and ethical issues, and learn medical terminology. Day 1 is a rigorous 12-hour day. Like the other 13 days, it will be exhaustive and challenging. You will be expected to understand and retain a lot of information in a relatively short time.
