Learn What to Expect on the Fourth Day of EMT Training

The 14-day EMT Boot Camp at Unitek EMT includes interactive classroom instruction, hands-on exercises, and clinical simulations. Taught by experienced EMS professionals, the Boot Camp includes about 12 hours of EMS instruction per day for 14 consecutive days. About the EMT Textbook

The textbook used throughout the EMT Boot Camp is: Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Digital Advantage Package, Twelfth Edition. Published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), this textbook provides the fundamental knowledge of the emergency medical services (EMS) system, safety and well-being of the emergency medical technician (EMT), and medical, legal, and ethical issues relevant to emergency care. Each chapter covers National EMS Education Standard Competencies.

EMT Textbook Chapter 12—Pharmacology: Summary

Provides knowledge of the medications that EMTs may assist with or administer to patients during an emergency. You will become familiar with the names, effects, actions, indications, and contraindications of various medications.

EMT Textbook Chapter 16—Respiratory Emergencies: Summary

Chapter 16 focuses on respiratory emergencies, including those that affect the upper and lower airways, lungs, and accessory structures of the respiratory system.

Students are taught the assessment and management of the following:

• Epiglottitis
• Spontaneous Pneumothorax
• Pulmonary Edema
• Asthma
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
• Environmental Exposure
• Cystic Fibrosis
• Pulmonary Embolism
• Pneumonia

After completing this chapter and coursework, you will understand the significance and characteristics of respiratory emergencies in infants, children, and adults. You should be able to demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the following topics: respiratory anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms of various respiratory conditions (eg, asthma, COPD, pneumonia), and the assessment and management necessary to provide basic care in the prehospital setting.

EMT Textbook Chapter 17—Cardiovascular Emergencies: Summary

Chapter 17 covers the cardiovascular system and the causes, effects, and management of cardiovascular emergencies. Students will study the following cardiovascular conditions:

After you complete this chapter and the related coursework, you will understand the significance and characteristics of:

Day 4: Summary

After successfully completing Day 4 of the EMT Boot Camp, you will have a solid foundation regarding the types of medications you can administer to a patient at the scene. You will be taught respiratory anatomy & physiology so you can assess and manage respiratory emergencies. You will also learn about the cardiovascular system and how to assess and manage cardiovascular emergencies. You will be able to perform CPR on different patient types, including removing foreign body airway obstructions.

Day 4 includes 12 hours of accelerated coursework and study. You will be expected to process and retain a lot of information in a relatively short time.
